News about the passing of Arvin Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, has triggered a debate on what the future holds for the Indian media, and its ability to compete.
But what is the current status of news about Kejriwal’s death, and why do people keep referring to him?
The Times spoke to editorial writers, journalists and commentators to get a sense of what is currently being reported in the Indian news media.
Aurangzeb had said the news of Kejriwal’s passing was a “sad day for the news business”, and was “the saddest day of journalism” in India.
A senior journalist who asked not to be named told the Times that the article was not widely read, and that “the main thing people wanted to know is how the death was handled”.
In a similar vein, a Times of Delhi editor said, “The news of Arvinder’s death came as a complete surprise to me.
The last two days had been filled with rumours and speculation.
It is understandable why the media was not looking into this issue, as news of the death would have been a news story.
We are talking about an extremely controversial death.”
But while it is understandable, a senior editor of a major newspaper said the situation is different now.
“I don’t think that this is a matter that has been covered much.
It was only recently that a news agency like Times of News reported that Kejriwal was in a coma for a few days, and then went on to report that he had been rushed to the hospital.
I have no idea why this story was mentioned only recently, and not the rest of the time,” the editor said.
This is a common perception in the news media, he said.
“It is a question of news management.
The media has a certain number of stories a week.
If you have too many stories in one week, it is not a good thing for the business.
It takes away from the importance of a story.
But if you have one story every other week, then it is a better story.
In fact, it could be argued that news is good when there are no major news stories in the newspapers every week, but not so when there is a big news story every week.
This is not the case now,” he said, adding that “no major news story” has been reported about Kejriwal since his death.
A senior editor in a major news agency told the newspaper that “a story on the death did not make the top of the agenda for any of the editorial boards.
We have never reported any story on Kejriwal’s condition.
This news story was only reported by one news agency and then the news was deleted.”
In a Facebook post, Kejriwal’s brother-in-law, Arvind, said that “I am deeply saddened by the news.
I know that this was a painful loss for many people in Delhi, but I think it was a good decision for the people of the state.
We all stand by Arvind and the decision was made to make him a full-time resident of the country.
He will be missed by everyone, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
A Times of Indian editor said “the death of the Arvind’s brother has been the news item in the media, but this was not reported widely.
We do not believe the news story is being widely read in the state anymore.
We don’t know whether it is still being covered, and if so, what it is about.”
A senior journalist told the paper that “It’s understandable that the media is not looking at this story now.
There is no news that has not been widely covered by the media.
The big story has been how Arvind died.
I think the media should be more focused on what Arvind did.
He is the founder of the party, and his death has taken away from his leadership.”
A newspaper editor said that the “big story” about Kejriwal was “a news story”, which “has never been widely reported in a big newspaper in Delhi”.
The journalist added that “there are many stories about Kejriwal that were not covered, but some of them are getting traction now.
It’s hard to tell which one is the big story and which one isn’t, but it is obvious that this has been a big story in the last couple of days”.
A senior Times of Lucknow editor said the story about Kejriwal “was not widely covered.
But the other day, I asked the reporter to write about the story, and she wrote about it very well.””
When we talked about it, he asked me whether I had any questions for him,” the Times editor added.
“He asked me if the news is spreading around.
I told him that there are a lot of stories on this, but the major news is that he has been taken away by ambulance from his home.
I didn’t think the news would be spread as well.”
